Willow Prairie Cabin neighbors Willow Prairie Horse Campground (shown above) and is only 5 miles from popular Fish Lake. Less than 5 miles to the northeast rises spectacular 9,495-foot Mt. McLoughlin. Visitors to the cabin are welcome to bring horses, as there are four paddocks and water troughs available, but those without horses are also welcome. The cabin faces a meadow and is surrounded by more than 19 miles of horse trails. Be aware that these are very rustic accommodations.

The Willow Prairie Cabin offers minimal amenities, The one-room log cabin is available for up to 4 occupants, but there are only sleeping cots for 2. A pair of shutter-style windows have no glass. Heat is provided by a wood stove. Other rustic furnishings include a counter space for meal preparation (clean thoroughly before use) and a table and chairs. The cabin has neither electricity nor running water. Water should be brought by guests for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Water for horses can be obtained from the nearby Willow Prairie Horse Campground. Despite what the websites say, there is no potable water at the campground. However, a vault toilet is available at the campground.

Outside are a picnic table and a campfire ring. Firewood provided at the cabin is for indoor use only. The firewood supply may run low and guests may need to split some. Bring an axe. Also outside, are four 12x12-foot horse paddocks and water troughs.

What Guests Need to Bring

Visitors to Willow Prairie Cabin need to bring a good supply of water. They also will need to provide their own bedding or sleeping bags, pillows, extra toilet paper, flashlights and battery-powered lanterns, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, a propane camp stove, all needed cookware and utensils, pest-proof food containers, a wine opener, dish soap, ample cleaning supplies and garbage bags. Guests must clean the cabin upon departure and take everything they brought, including garbage and food.

Willow Prairie Cabin Access

"Wheeled-vehicle access is usually possible only from late spring through fall. Vehicle access in winter is subject to weather conditions. Winter parking along Highway 140 is permissible in designated areas with an Oregon State Sno-Park Permit. Winter access on skis or snowmobiles can range from 2 to 6 miles, and the difficulty level will be moderate to difficult depending on snow conditions."

"Visitors pulling a trailer or driving a low-clearance vehicle must turn left at the intersection of Forest Road 3738 and Forest Road 3735 and travel a quarter of a mile to the Willow Prairie Campground overflow parking area. This is where horses may be unloaded and horse trailers, as well as vehicles, may be parked during the visitor's stay."

"Entry to the cabin is by combination lock. The combination will be included in your confirmation letter. LOCK OPERATIONS: Once the combination has been entered, the shank of the lock must be depressed into the body of the lock, and then released before the lock will open.
You may contact the Prospect Ranger Station at 541-560-3400 prior to arriving at the cabin to check on any restrictions or conditions, such as fire or road closures, weather or storms that may affect the quality of your visit."

Advice from Previous Visitors

Beautiful meadow with many deer, bugs, chipmunks, mice, beaver, and birds.
Be aware of rodents. A dog helps keep them at bay.
