Fivemile Butte Lookout rises 40 feet above a forest of pines, firs, and hemlocks atop Fivemile Butte east of Mt. Hood. Panoramic views of Cascade Range peaks, including Mt. Hood (somewhat more distant than shown above), valleys, and spreading forests are enjoyed from windows and the railed-in catwalk that surrounds the tower cabin.

In the summer guests enjoy hiking, and mountain biking. In winter visitors set off cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. The single, 14 x 14 feet cabin is available to rent year-round and has a maximum occupancy of 4.

Lookout Features

Access to the lookout is by a stairway beneath the lookout cabin. Inside, the single room has a small bed suitable for 2, a wood stove, a table and chairs. The lookout is equipped with solar lighting and a propane cook stove/oven. Pots and pans, cooking utensils, and cleaning supplies are provided. There is no water. An outhouse is situated nearby along with a shed stocked with firewood. Tent camping is permitted. A rope and pulley system is available to transport gear, as well as firewood, up and down the tower with ease. A campfire ring is available outside.

What Guests Need to Bring

Guests need to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. They also must supply for own bedding or sleeping bags, toilet paper, flashlights, first aid kit, washcloths and towels, silverware, wine opener, dish soap and garbage bags.. Guests must clean the cabin upon departure and take everything, including garbage and food.

Fivemile Butte Lookout Access

"During winter driving conditions, from early fall to late spring, the lookout can only be accessed by skiing, snowmobiling or snowshoeing up to 3 miles one way from a parking area at the Billy Bob Sno-Park. A Northwest Forest Pass is required for the parking area at Billy Bob Sno-park," Sno-Park Parking Permit

  1. Smoking is not allowed in the cabin.
  2. The cabin must be thoroughly cleaned before departure. Leave behind no food or other items you brought to the cabin.
  3. Firewood is provided for indoor use only.
  4. "The height of the cabin and the open catwalk pose serious risks for children and pets; the steps and catwalk can become quite slippery and the tower may sway in strong winds."
